About This Item
Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1954. Hardcover. 8vo. Brown cloth with gilt lettering. 450pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Faint and mild binding edgewear. Second printing of this 1939 biography of Lord Melbourne (William Lamb, 1779-1848), two-time British prime minister. Interestingly, tipped to front flyleaf is the 3" X 2" heavy stock "Compliments of Thomas R. Coward" card -- Coward co-founded Coward-McCann Publishing Company in 1928 with James A. McCann and later became a Bobbs-Merrill Executive. He pens on this card: "Dear Warwick -- / I think you'll like / this -- hope so. / Love to all & thanks / for all / T--." Below this "Warwick" signs -- Warwick Anderson, and dates it May, 1955. Anderson (1903-76) was a Louisville advertising firm owner and his daughter Nancy married Adlai E. Stevenson III (Illinois senator 1970-81) -- from whose library this hails. A routine copy with an intriguing history.
