A sacred site for Buddhists and Taoists, it is associated with the temple founded by Zen master, Zhiman, later known as, Xiangfu Monastery. It became a pilgrimage site for artists, poets, and scholars, and with the ascendency of the Manchu, a refuge for the Ming court. MEI QING [1623-1697]: was born into a family of scholars in Anhui province. After fleeing Manchu troops in 1642, he traveled widely, coming to Yellow Mountain in 1671 and returning in 1690. He had a long-term collaborative relationship with the painter, Shitao, author of the treatise, "Huayu lu" (Remarks on Painting). His later life was devoted to painting Yellow Mountain from memory and his surviving works are known from album leaves and hanging scrolls that chiefly date from 1690-95. REFERENCE: Shadows of Mt. Huang, edited by James Cahill. Grove Dictionary, v. 21, p. 60. ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.
