Author's first novel, Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Winner of the Oklahoma Book Award for Fiction, Winner of the Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award. Although it is known that oil discoveries in Oklahoma in the 1920's made many Indians rich, it is less well known that it also spurred a vicious campaign to despoil these Indians of their property and rights. A fictional account focusing on the Graycloud family, who lived there and by Chickasaw poet and writer.
Early in this century, rivers of oil were found beneath Oklahoma land belonging to Indian people, and beautiful Grace Banket became the richest person in the Territory. But she was murdered by the greed of white men, and the Graycloud family, who cared for her daughter, began dying mysteriously. Letters sent to Washington, D.C. begging for help went unanswered, until at last a Native American government official, Stace Red Hawk, traveled west to investigate. What he found has been documented by history: rampant fraud, intimidation, and murder. But he also found something truly extraordinary--his deepest self and abiding love for his people, and their brave past. Inventory

Reviews
Set in Oklahoma in the 1920's, this novel tells of the discovery of oil on Cherokee land and the ensuing fraud, intimidation and violence perpetrated against them in the name of wealth. If you have been looking for something that has a Milagro Beanfield War feel to it this is the closest I've come.
Fiction, but a fascinating account of the trials of the Osage when oil was found underneath their reservation in Oklahoma. One of the finest historical novels ever written by a seminal voice in Native American fiction. Linda Hogan's The Book Of Medicines is also not to be missed.
