About This Item
New York; (1886): Harper and Brothers. First Edition. Octavo. 348pp., (4)pp. publisher's ads. Illustrated by H. Rose. A unique copy from the library of Horace Edwin Hayden with with his extensive notes. He was a noted Virginian author on genealogies of the state's leading families, here he writes on the errors of Lossing's book on Martha Washington and his mother Mary. Besides the pencil notes in text noted false there are two pages of careful writing signed by Hayden on the front end papers and a 3-page biofolium insert of his further notes also signed by Hayden. Hayden had written elsewhere of Lossing's errors on the Civil War (he himself remained a supporter of the Confederacy and its ideals). The notes are invaluable in their thoroughness as well as their condition. Bound in brown gilt decorated cloth, spine and all edges gilt, wear to corners, chipping to spine ends, hinges have an old repair.
