New York: Duell, Sloan & Pearce, 1941. First edition. Square 4to, [7], 160pp. Photographs throughout. Chronological tables, glossary of dances, and dance group member list at rear. Inscribed by Graham to Nellie Bond on ffep, with a note in red, likely in Bond's hand, describing a discussion between her and Louis Horst in regards to Martha Graham's age on the verso. Beige cloth, spine and upper board lettered in red, in illustrated jacket. Boards with moderate to heavy foxing, mainly along spine. Preliminaries foxed and with some rust marks from paperclips along top edge. Jacket with crude tape and paper repairs to underside, faded spine, and chipping to edges and spine ends. A good example.
Fine association of this important photographic work on Martha Graham (1894-1991), one of the most influential modern dancers and choreographers, sometimes dubbed "The Picasso of Dance." This copy inscribed "with love" to Nellie-Bond Dickinson (1912-2003). From the Nellie-Bond Dickinson and Mary B. Settle Endowment webpage at FSU:
"Nellie-Bond Dickinson (1912-2003) introduced modern dance - and Martha Graham - to FSU and Tallahassee. She established the high artistic standards that inform the School of Dance today and, with seriousness and style, set it on a path that has led to national prominence. Dickinson, known to friends and associates as 'Bondie', led dance at the university from 1935 to 1963, a period that included the 1947 transition from Florida State College for Women to co-ed Florida State University. Her impact was powerful: in person, on stage, and within the institution."
Dickinson worked with Graham at least twice at the university, and also with Graham's close musical colleague, Louis Horst, who provides the choreographic record at the end of this book. .
