London & New York: John Lane The Bodley Head Limited, 1921. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Translated from the original French by J. Lewis France (Jacques Anatole Francois Thibault, 1844-1924), a bibliophile and librarian, was a prominent supporter, with Zola, of Alfred Dreyfus. In 1921 (the year of this book's publication) he won the Nobel Prize; in the year all of his works were put on the Index of banned books by the Roman Catholic Church. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition in English. Translated from the original French by J. Lewis May, and illustrated with 29 delightful woodcuts by Simeon. Brown paper-covered boards with a tan linen spine. Illustrated paper label on the front cover; red lettering on the spine. Clean text; 75 pages, followed by one page with a final illustration. Exceptionallly bright text. Red topstain; other page ends rough-cut. There is a previous-owner signature on the FFEP dated 1923. A sweet little book; no dustjacket.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. Illus. by Simeon. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
