About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1990. First edition. 8vo, 184pp. Blue paper boards, spine with copper lettering, in illustrated jacket. Spine slightly cocked, some bumping at spine ends and corners. Jacket rubbed and worn in similar locations and along bottom edge of rear panel. Very good.

Somewhat hard to find first printing of this Newbery winning work from Spinelli.  Tells the story of Jeffrey Lionel "Maniac" Magee and his struggles in the racially segregated town of Two Mills.  The book is still widely studied in schools today for its exploration of the issues of race and class.  .

Synopsis

Maniac Magee is a young adult fiction novel written by American author Jerry Spinelli and published in 1990. Exploring themes of racism and homelessness, it follows the story of an orphaned boy looking for a home in the fictional Pennsylvania town of Two Mills. He becomes a local legend for feats of athleticism and fearlessness, and his ignorance of sharp racial boundaries in the town.
