About This Item
San Francisco: Fraenkel Gallery, 2001. Hardcover. Near Fine/no jacket. Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco, 2001. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. A Fine copy of the Trade Edition, Limited to 5000 copies. Illustrated boards with photo-insets, bound with canvas at the spine, without jacket as issued. A portfolio of plates from the 1950's [1955-59] when Avedon was working for Harper's Bazaar; presented as a facsimile of a working notebook, with photos in 8x10 contact print format. Accompanying essay, "Hidden Women," by Judith Thurman. The subject models include Suzy Parker, Gardner McKay, Audrey Hepburn, Buster Keaton, and Dovima (with the famous rearing elephants portrait). The movie Funny Face [Paramount Pictures, 1957, which starred Fred Astaire as the fashion photographer, and Audrey Hepburn as his model] was based largely on Avedon during this very period in his career. An inspired piece of bookmaking, capturing the spirit of the time in elegant and light-hearted imagery. C269LL.
