Pages are moderately tanned and foxed throughout, heavier at end-papers, paste-downs and text-block edges. Heavily cracked binding. Exposed binding thread at the hinges. Pages partially detached from half title up to the first page of chapter 1. Rear board bent, cracking visible. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Cloth has minor damp and dust stains. Mild crushing to spine ends. Book has a heavy forward lean. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Creasing to spine cloth.

First published in 1877, this is perhaps the favourite of Black's novels, seven of which we have listed in matching binding. Violet North is an attractive girl in her late teens who seems to go from one "scene" to another with hardly a break. She has irritated her German teacher into calling her a devil, which incident she is now piously describing to the Principal. She skips school for a day with a boy she hasn't known before. Later, she falls madly in love with a philosophizing recluse, whom she worries into consumption. He dies, but Violet continues to expect a letter from him. 394 pp..
