This novel is humorous, ironic, and deeply moving. lt is set half in England and half in the author's native state of Maine. The story's action centers around John Tillyard, a Wesleyan parson who at the turn of the century brings his wife and three children from England when he takes over a Methodist parish in downeast Maine.
