Set in a fictionalized version of the town in which Bates grew up, this historical novel is "perhaps his most accomplished" (ODNB). In 1977 it was adapted as a television series starring Jeremy Irons. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge red. With the dust jacket. Embossed ownership stamp on front free endpaper. Spine cocked, extremities lightly rubbed, minor marks to cloth, spots of foxing to edges; unclipped jacket bright, faint damp stain to verso, edges creased, a couple of nicks and chips: a very good copy in like jacket.
