About This Item

Contemporary gilt-ruled sprinkled calf, contrasting red Morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed, lightly marked, joints starting, loss to head and foot of spine. Contemporary inked ownership inscriptions of James Crombie of Glasgow to FFEP and head of title, scattered foxing. The first edition of Scottish advocate and philosopher, Henry Home, Lord Kames's (1696- 1782) last major work, a controversial treatise which argues that the heart, rather than the head, should be the focus of education. The work drew criticism from certain quarters for its emphasis on training to develop sensibility, with some suggesting that it showed a lack of respect to Christianity. ESTC T58640.. Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.
Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.
We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.
We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
