"Mr. Amis plays witty, wicked, rhymed, and metrical games with subjects generally left, even in a time of total frankness, to writers of prose; and in at least one poem he demonstrates that although it is fashionable in some circles to speculate about the death of God, blasphemy in verse is still possible. Not all these poems, though, are savage or satirical or outrageous. Cool irony occurs in many of them, or wry pessimism, or epigrammatic reflection; there are even moments of poignancy.
