About This Item

London: Office, 16 Upper Wellington St., 1851. Single large volume, bound in dark green half-leather, presumably contemporary, five raised bands, titles in gilt, but minimal decoration, leather generally rubbed, boards covered with marbled paper, worn at edges, marbled endpapers; numerous full-page illustrations, from daguerrotypes, by Beard, text throughout two columns to the page. Text has Volume 1 complete, but volumes 2 and 3 are incomplete. Volume 2 ends at page 414, mid-sentence in a section on the Management of the Sewers and the Late Commission. Volume 3 ends on page 192, also mid-sentence, in a section on Prostitution in Spain. This is followed by sections titled To Correspondents, and Answers to Correspondents. These are in a highly unusual format, which, while adhering to the double-column format of the rest of the work, seem to have appeared first in another publication, and to have been pasted in on extra leaves added to the binding. (Extra photos and information on request.) The text throughout is clean, sound and tight. The incomplete volumes 2 and 3 seem to be as issued - I do not know why it was done this way. The Gutenberg Project copy of this work refers to the 1851 edition having vols. 2 and 3 incomplete, and uses the 1862 edition (in which the printing is not double-column). Rare.. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Beard. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

London Labour and the London Poor is a work of Victorian journalism by Henry Mayhew. In the 1840s he observed, documented and described the state of working people in London for a series of articles in a newspaper, the Morning Chronicle, that were later compiled into book form. The articles go into deep, almost pedantic detail concerning the trades, habits, religion and domestic arrangements of the thousands of people working the streets of the city.
