First Edition of the radical English journalist, political philosopher and novelist’s last book, which was written "to exhibit a fair delineation of the credulity of the human mind." Godwin’s survey of witchcraft and supernatural beliefs begins with biblical stories and ancient superstitions and ends with the witch trials of the seventeenth century in England and New England. Included are chapters on Pythagoras, Dido, the Oracles, the Arabian Nights, Merlin, St. Dunstan, Roger Bacon, Macbeth, Joan of Arc, Savonarola, Faustus, Paracelsus, Benvenuto Cellini, Doctor Dee, &c. One of the admirers of the book was American author Edgar Allan Poe who wrote a review of it for the ‘Southern Literary Messenger’ in 1835. NCBEL II 1250.
