Illustrated with nine indexed figures in text, and thirty-five indexed, unpaginated plates, including frontispiece. Foldout figure intact and without tears. Faint splatter stain and school stamp on top edge of textblock Forest green cloth with goldstamp figure of Pitman and gold lettering on cover, gold lettering on spine. No wear to covers or spine. Titled DJ is clean and without wear, showing sunning to spine. First published 1908, second (Centenary) edition in 1913 by Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons (London), this is a facsimile reprint of the 1913 edition. The biography is supplemented by Pitman's own work Stenographic Sound-hand (1837), and details of the evolution of phonography.
