Alonzo Delano was advised by his physician to seek a change of climate and life in the open air. Accordingly, Delano left for the gold fields by the overland route. His journey began in St Joseph in April of 1849. Delano arrived in Shasta County, California in September. The day to day incidents, set down in his diary, became the opening chapters of this book. (Howes Final Edition, Number 233; Paher's Nevada, Number 463; Mintz's Trail, number 121; Wheat's Gold Rush, number 57; Cowan, page 163) Lannon Mintz states, ''This may be the most interesting of all early California overland books.'' This includes the publisher's insert.
