Published by Blackie, London, 1908. 8vo up to 9½" tall., 352pp. with colour frontis and six black and white illustrative plates; double page color map of the Civil War 1861-1865; 16pp. rear illustrated publisher's ads. Blue boards with illustration front and spine, gilt titles front and spine. In very good condition with 1919 prize award to pastedown; contents are without folds, tears or markings. Light wear to boards, spotting to outside edges of text block.
William Gordon Stables (1840-1910) was a Scottish-born medical doctor in the Royal Navy and a prolific author of adventure fiction, primarily for boys.
Sidney Edward Paget (1860-1908) was a British illustrator of the Victorian era, best known for his illustrations that accompanied Arthur Conan Doyle 's Sherlock Holmes stories in The Strand magazine.
