About This Item
Newcastle-upon-Tyne: Mackenzie and Dent, 1828. Revised, Improved and Authentic. Hardcover. Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy, a quite attractive copy of a fascinating volume, being a New, Improved, and Authentic edition, augmented with E. Mackenzie's Explanatory Notes and a number of lovely engravings by Knox from designs by Cruikshanks. Original publisherâs brown cloth binding. This Imperial octavo hardcover measures 6â x 9â, with six black-and-white plates five of them being misbound (frontispiece is placed correctly) and placed at front, post-frontis. The front paste-down has a small, tipped-in article about this book, and there are extensive pencil inscriptions also detailing the contents of the book also inside front flap. Pages and covers are clean and intact overall. Pages are slightly browned and rippled. Offsetting on title page from the frontispiece. Chipping at the head and tail of the spine. The label on the spine, possibly contemporary, is chipped with pieces missing, but title is still readable. Front and back hinges are cracked. A Good condition copy still, however, still sturdy, protected by Mylar jacket. The engraving by J. Knox at frontis is literally a work of art, perhaps the finest of the time period Iâve ever seen, depicting as it does the young Master Allan, piper to the stars (or at least Countess) and thief extraordinaire, at perhaps a Gypsy encampment. The others are amusing, sharp and evocative. vi [7-9], 10-479 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
