About This Item

[New York: Studio Duplicating Service, ca 1985]. Quarto typescript (11" x 8-1/2"). Post-bound vinyl fabric wrappers, titled in gilt on front cover. Variously paginated; includes title page, plot synopsis and stage instructions followed by complete text of the play. Photocopied, printed recto-only. Very Good, with slight curling to wrapper edges. The text differs sufficiently from the published version (we note about eight minor changes to dialogue and stage directions in the first three scenes alone) that we assume this to be a pre-production circulating draft, produced for professional use but issued without copyright notice or date.

Shepard's multi-award winning three-act play premiered off-Broadway at the Promenade Theatre in December, 1985, featuring an all-star cast that included James Gammon, Harvey Keitel, Geraldine Page, Aidan Quinn, Will Patton and Amanda Plummer, directed by Shepard himself. A Lie of the Mind ran for six months; it was revived to acclaim in 2010, directed by Ethan Hawke. A published version, issued by New American Library, appeared in 1987. An uncommon format, likely intended for private circulation to agents and actors.
