About This Item

New York: Collier Books, 1969. Reprint Edition. good. 18 cm, 511, wraps, some ink underlining Introduction by Richard S. Peters. One of the Collier Classics in the History of Thought series. More than a brilliant and ruthless analysis of the bases of government, Leviathan embodies a vast structure of thought. It embraces physical nature, man as an individual, and man as a citizen of the state. It contains ideas on psychology, ethics, law, language, and religion that continue to exercise a profound influence on Western thought.

Synopsis

Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan, from 1651, is one of the first and most influential arguments towards social contract. Written in the midst of the English Civil War, it concerns the structure of government and society and argues for strong central governance and the rule of an absolute sovereign as the way to avoid civil war and chaos.
