About This Item
London: Seeleys , 1849. First edition. Paperback. Fine. 8" by 5.5". None. A fine, very scarce political tract by Charles Newdegate regarding the balance of trade and opposing Adam Smith The first edition of this work. Written on the balance of trade ascertained from the market value and of all articles imported during the last four years. Charles Newdegate was an MP for North Warwickshire at the time of writing this tract. He opposed free trade. In this tract he discusses the 1844 Bank Charter Act, and opposes the writings of Adam Smith. He cites the Wealth of Nations as teaching to 'disregard the balance of trade because he thought it irrelevant to the means of securing a favourable condition of the powers of production and of trade in this or any other country' (p.4). The pamphlet is addressed to a politician and wealthy banker Henry Du Pre Labouchere. He briefly served in Parliament in 1865-1868. Rebound, in recent boards. Externally, fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional light spots to the first and last few pages. Fine
