About This Item

New York: Ticknor & Fields, 1988. First Edtiion. Octavo. Signed by the author. 244pp., The author's second book. A story about Miracle City, a squalid jumble of unpainted shacks and trailers that is nonetheless a welcome haven to the residents of this poverty-stricken community. The area's most important citizen is the eponymous Big Lucien Letourneau, who runs the auto salvage junkyard at which most of the men work. It's a brutal life. There are times when Lucien can't afford to pay his men but he does have a heart fo gold. He is said to be a one-man welfare system, sheltering the destitute, homeless and elderly. Bound in green paper covered boards backed in black cloth, spine lettering gilt. A fine bright copy in near fine unclipped pictorial dust jacket showing minute rubbing to corners.

Synopsis

In this “assured, complex and memorable tale” (Publishers Weekly), Chute once again makes a tiny corner of the world her own,a kind of Oz turned upside down with a wizard named Big Lucien, head of the Letourneau clan, another ragtag family that inhabits Egypt, Maine, and the nearby Miracle City.
