About This Item
London, Jonathan Cape, 1936. . First edition, first impression, initialled presentation copy from the author; 8vo; publisher's cloth, a fine copy, dust-jacket slightly sunned at spine, but otherwise near fine.
A fine copy of Wyndham Lewis' caustic, often amusing critique of both the far right and the far left, one of only 1500 copies printed. The author has inscribed the front free endpaper, 'To Collin Brooks from W.L. June 1936' (the month of publication).
[William] Collin Brooks (1893-1959), journalist, novelist and political commentator, a frequent advocate of rearmament and a stronger State. That Lewis should have presented such a potential adversary of democracy with a hot-off-the-press copy of the book is perhaps indicative of both his optimism and his determination to get his point of view known in the right circles, so to speak.
