About This Item
Boston: Richardson, Lord and Holbrook, 1829. First edition. 8vo. 135, [1], [12, ads] pp. Uncut in publisher's cloth-backed boards, printed spine label; light scuffing to covers, near fine First edition of the first American book on pedagogy, a collection of thirteen lectures addressed to prospective teachers. Hall (1795-1877) was a founder of the American Institute of Instruction and a leader of the school reform movement. He advocated for teachers to be rigorously trained, adequately compensated for their labor, and equipped with useful educational tools and supplies (Hall popularized the use of the chalkboard in schools). The object, in lecturing and writing, has been to present the nature of their employment, to those who are preparing themselves to instruct; and to impress them with the importance of being properly qualified, and faithful in their employment, as well as to give such directions for governing and teaching as might be useful to them (Preface). Hall imagines a primarily male audience for his lectures, though the final lecture is addressed To Female Instructors. PROVENANCE: Hallowell [Maine] Social Library (printed regulations pasted to front pastedown)
