Semi-autobiographical story about life on the open road in the 19th century, by the English novelist and travel writer George Borrow (1803-1881). 588pp illustrated with tissue guarded black and white drawing to frontis and black and white drawings to the text. All edges gilt, illustrated endpapers. Gilt design and lettering to top board and spine. Dulled lettering to spine and former owner's stamp to half title page, otherwise very good copy..

Synopsis

Lavengro: The Scholar, the Gypsy, the Priest is a work by George Borrow, falling somewhere between the genres of memoir and novel, which has long been considered a classic of 19th century English literature. According to the author lav-engro is a Romany word meaning "word master". The historian G. M. Trevelyan called it "a book that breathes the spirit of that period of strong and eccentric characters".
