About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Written about a century ago, Myrtle Reed?s Lavender and Old Lace describes emotions that have not changed since the book came out, moving today?s readers and provoking feelings exactly the same way it did in the Victorian era.

The novel begins by introducing Miss Jane Hathaway, a middle-aged lady living in a hill-top house in a quiet coastal village. One day, she receives a letter from a niece of hers, Ruth Thorne, the daughter of Jane?s sister she became estranged from after the sister scandalously eloped decades before. In the letter, Ruth suggests a visit to her aunt, which Jane accepts, but she decides to leave the village prior to the arrival of her niece.

Ruth finds herself alone in her aunt?s house, with a letter left to her by Jane in which she instructs Ruth to light a candle every evening in the attic. When Ruth climbs to the attic, she finds an old trunk with mementos of old times, among them a wedding dress, some newspaper clippings and a death notice. She spends the following days getting to know the village ? she meets Aunt Jane?s childhood friend and other villagers. She also meets a journalist who spends time in the village and the two young people fall in love with each other. Aunt Jane also returns, eventually and to everyone?s surprise, as a married woman, but this is only the beginning of the many surprising events that follow.

Myrtle Reed is a true master of romantic stories. Love, intricate relationships, entanglement, conflict and resolution come woven in a way that makes Reed?s stories exciting and eventful. Readers can be sure they are in for a few laughs and tears as they take in this wonderful story about love, lavender, memories, old lace and so much more.
