NY: Modern Library; (1956/1963). First Thus . Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. First Modern Library edition, very good in a very good dust jacket. Bookplate mostly vehind front flap of jacket; minor wear to green cloth. The price clipped jacket has a $1.75 price sticker from Long's just below the clip, and a little bit of edgewear to the black jacket. The rear panel has light spotting/soiling. This title was only published from 1963 to 1970 by Modern Library (#336.1), and is accordingly scarce. 415 total ML titles listed on the inside of the jacket, indicating a 1963 date of publication.
Synopsis
Mary Renault was born in London and educated at Oxford. She then trained for three years as a nurse, and wrote her first published novel, Promise of Love . Her next three novels were written while serving in WWII. After the war, she settled in South Africa and traveled considerably in Africa and Greece. It was at this time that she began writing her brilliant historical reconstructions of ancient Greece, including The King Must Die, The Last of the Wine , and The Persian Boy . She died in Cape Town in 1983.
