German film director, artist and dance Leni Riefenstahl (1902-2003), felt the call to Africa by reading Hemmingway's Green Hills of Africa in the mid 1950s. She took up photography an in 1962, at the age of 60, she set out to know the remote people of Mesakin Nuba of Kordofan, Sudan. She will live amongst them, off and on, for some years. This is her portrait of the Nuba in the 1960s, narrated in prose and superb photography, all the more wonderful as our world shrinks and we edge towards uniformity. Fine copy.
