This fine portrait by George Catlin (Pennsylvania 1796-1872) is based on the first- hand field studies created for his seminal work the Native American Indian Tribes: Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio and represent the earliest, most authentic depiction of the native peoples of North America which illustrated Prichard's universal ethnography. Based on the work of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (Gotha 1752-1840) who pioneered the study of anthropology, James C. Prichard, (1786-1848) a Quaker from Herefordshire with a strong belief in abolitionism contended the human race descended from a single set of parents from an aboriginal culture.
