Straight and very firmly bound with no markings, spots to boards, spine a bit faded, light spine-end and corner wear, stain to bottom edge, faint evidence of dampstain to top edge of a few pages. The Georgia native and popular Victorian author of 30 novels presents a Sherlock Holmes-style detective story featuring a taunting villain, a particularly gruesome murder, and an Indian mystic and master hypnotist in a castle with a secret dungeon.

Burroughs was the prominent 19th century American literary naturalist for whom the Burroughs Medal (the highest award in this country for writing in natural history) is named. Some edgewear to top front and top back boards, tips, and spine. Light spotting to front cover. Gift inscription in 1871 on FFEP, otherwise a clean and bright copy.

Hardcover. Very Good. First US edition of his first book. Author's edition on verso. Some copies have ads on eps. This is the state with plain eps. Spine is soiled and crown of spine has some edge wear. Front and rear boards have faded some. Eps have tanning but book is otherwise internally clean. Front fly-leaf has small chip to upper right hand corner. Rear eps has some cracking at gutter but book is bound quite solidly. Small bookstore stamp on inside of front board.
