Carey lived in the Fiji Islands from 1859 through 1875, writing this poem in the 1860's. "Interwoven wit hthe historical portions of the work, which cover a period of one hundred and thirty years, more or less, is a good deal of fiction from the legends of the islands; and, interspersed with fact and fiction, are manners and customs of the people, with words of wisdom from their sages."
