Publisher's original red cloth with white upper board lettering over chess game design, octavo, pp. 368. Frontis illustration of the author returning from the war zone with a Captain Finch aboard the S. S. "Arabic." Spine ends and board tips just very light shelf wear. Front hinge is a bit tender. Leaves toned with age. This copy with a unique and desirable presentation inscription, occupying nearly the entire free front endpaper: "To a very fine soldier and splendid gentleman, dear Admiral Mayo, goes this account of what I saw during the first months of what is now our war." Vice Admiral [Henry T.] Mayo, a native of Burlington, Vermont, served as Commander in Chief of the Atlantic Fleet during World War I.
