About This Item

London: Henry Sotheran, 1881 . Cloth. Good Only. 10.5" by 8". Not Stated. The second edition of this vibrantly illustrated celebration of Japanese ceramics, by George A. Audsley and James L. Bowes. The second edition of this work, first published in 1875. In the bright publisher's original cloth binding.Rarely seen in the original binding as the gutta percha usually fails as it has here. Collated, illustrated with thirty-one plates, just over half of which are vibrant chromolithographs, and with further colour and monochrome vignette illustrations. Lacking plate twenty-nine.With a former owner's inscription to the front pastedown, dated 1897.A beautiful celebration of ceramics in Japan throughout the centuries, offering an insight into Japanese porcelain, pottery and decorative arts up to the late nineteenth century. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head, with light handling marks to boards. Hinges strained, and slightly tender. Inscription to front pastedown. Internally, binding largely failed due to gutta percha. Half title, title page and frontispiece detached and loosely inserted, with a further twelve leaves detached and loosely inserted throughout the work, and remaining leaves exceptionally tender, and prone to detaching. Pages age toned, but clean. Lacking one plate. Chromolithographs remaining exceptionally vibrant. Good Only
