About This Item

Leipzig, Germany: Karl W. Hiersemann, 1906. Very Good condition but for small chip to one corner of the rear wrap. Square and tight. A sound copy. Wraps are NOT detached. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are unmarked, clean and crisp. 1906. First Edition. Bookseller Karl W. Hiersemann's first manuscript catalogue #330. Illustrated with 23 plates, some folding. The preface is in English and French, as well as German. 488 entries with annotations in German. English title: "Manuscripts of the Middle-Ages and of Later Times, Miniatures on Leaves, Facsimiles." Bound in the original wraps printed in red and black. 7.25" (18.5 cm) wide by 10.5" (26.5 cm) tall. From the English-language preface: "The most notable place in it occupy medieval manuscripts of the Xth to the XVth centuries, calligraphically written and richly decorated with miniatures, borders and initials in the splendid style of those times, which has not hitherto been attained: a class which in artistic regard has a considerable complement in the separate leaves with miniatures and initials, enumerated under No. 221 sqq. There are further a great many valuable manuscripts of the XVIth to the last century, also documents and collectanea, bearing on historical, geographical, diplomatic and literary subjects. Other pieces are written in oriental languages or in Russian or regarding the Slavonian concern, both in form of books and rolls, some of them richly illustrated; besides a quantity of oriental paintings on separate leaves. The explanation and esthetic appreciation of this pictorial material, as well as the utilisation of the numerous unpublished texts is reserved to the acquirers of these treasures. -- Students of military and nautical matters will find numerous interesting writings, maps and drawings. The medieval antiphonaries and song-books of the subsequent times apply to the connoisseurs of music -- not to speak of cimelies like n. 188 or n. 189. There are finally numerous pieces in all parts of the catalogue which will furnish valuable materials to the study of costumes and of palaeography. I use therefore no language of exaggeration when I say that amateurs of art as well as students of nearly all branches of knowledge will be interested in this catalogue.". First Edition. Softcover. Very Good condition. 221pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.
