The ship's crew of 25 were left stranded on the ice while the expedition leader continued on his northern exploration, not returning for five years. In the ensuing struggle for survival eight men died moving across the ice floes, one shot himself, 2 died of malnutrition and the rest barely managed to survive until rescue came. The incredible story is told by the magnetician and meteorologist for the expedition, Angus McDonald, a Scottish schoolteacher then 25 years of age.
