His father, Florence or Big Flurry, was from Ireland, married a girl from New York and moved to Wichita to become a farmer, a profession he was not good at. The author tells of family life, his upbringing, the problems of being Irish and Catholic in Kansas, and of a multitude of family problems both farming and marital.
