An intriguing work of early African travel presented in the form of two journals. Samuel Crowther became the first African bishop in the Anglican Church. The ordeal of his captivity by Moslem slave-traders and liberation by the Royal Navy is narrated here in an appendix. Schön was a German missionary and linguist who was active in Sierra Leone.
