The photographer John Deakin (1912-1972) was a natural successor to August Sander and precursor of Diane Arbus. His work is often merciless and direct in its gaze. In this book the author, Robin Muir, a former picture editor of British Vogue has brought together a comprehensive collection of Deakins most important photographs, published to accompany the exhibition of Deakin's work held at the National Portrait Gallery, London in April 1996. .
