About This Item
NP [North Carolina], 1859. Partly printed document, completed in manuscript. 20 x 32 cm. Waybill, on blue paper, for J.M. Bland & Co.'s Line, United States Mail. Old fold lines, old soiling and spotting. Recto shows the company's record of a trip on Feb. 16, 1859, with columns for the passengers names, number of seats, baggage, departure point and destination, fare, etc. Verso prints the company name, with columns for recording arrivals and departures. One passenger, a James Fairington [sp?] boarded at Salem, headed for Red[d]ies River; M.L. Williams placed a package on board at Yadkinville to be delivered to Panther Creek. A list of post offices in North Carolina, printed by the Government Printing Office in 1852-53 includes locations at Jefferson (Ashe County), Panther Creek (Surry County), and Reddies River (Wilkes County). One of the contractors for the transportation of mail in the state at that time was Bland & Dunn and their Great Northern & Southern Stage Line. Presumably J.M. Bland was sole proprietor by the time of this waybill in 1859.
