About This Item

Philadelphia: The Jewish Publication Society of America, 1979. First edition. Hardcover. g. 8vo. xviii. Hebrew and English. English 422 pp, Hebrew 164 pp. Beige cloth in original printed dust jacket. Scholarly edition of a classic medieval Jewish anti-Christian text. Responds to Christian uses of Old Testament passages and uses the New Testament to attack various Christian doctrines such as the divinity of Jesus and Original Sin. The author also attacks various common Christian practices such as confession and the use of relics. Contains original Hebrew text, an English translation and footnotes. Author's introduction provides a general context for the book within day to day Jewish-Christian relations. He argues that this book reflects real conversations between lay Jews and Christians. Text in English and Hebrew. Slight age wear on dj. Binding in good, interior in very good condition. Dr. David Berger is considered one of leading scholars in the field of medieval Jewish-Christian relations. He taught at Brooklyn College and is presently the dean of Jewish Studies at Yeshiva University. Dr. Berger's professional training as a historian has lead him to become involved in modern day Jewish-Christian dialogue. More controversially, he has opposed the Chabad Lubavitch movement, authoring The Rebbe, the Messiah and the Scandal of Orthodox Indifference, arguing for the movement's wholesale excommunication on account of having abandoned what he sees as the traditional Jewish position that the Messiah cannot be from the dead.
