"Japhet was reared in a foundling hospital, and apprenticed to a Smithfield apothecary, his good looks, impulsive self-confidence, and unbounded talent for lying, carried him with éclat through the professions of quack doctor, juggler, and mountebank, gentleman about town, tramp, and quaker to emerge triumphantly at last as the only son of a wealthy Anglo-Indian general, or 'Bengal tiger,' as his friends preferred to call him." Condition notes - 418 numbered pp; HB. Pages: clean, ivory, tight, t.e.g., b.e./f.e. highly deckled, decorative front ep, sepia frontis w/ tissue guard; a.e. mildly tanned and foxed, w/occasional scant foxing near page f.e., PO names inked to ffep, "James" written heavily in think pencil to lfep, front hinge just starting. Cover midnight blue, gilt device front, bright gilt ornamentation and titles spine; lt shelfwear, extrems modestly worn, dimple to spine, sm tears to back near b.e. A quite nice copy of a beautiful book, if you can overlook the PO info.
