About This Item
Tokyo: Fujin Seikatsu Sha, 1981. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Hardcover First Edition 146 pages, 23 x 26,5 cm. Over 120 photographs, most in full color. Dark blue cloth hardcover binding with silver lettering on front board. Book wrapped in wax paper and a dark blue hardcover folder with plastic ties. One small tear in wax paper and sunned spine to trifold felt folder. Includes laid in illustrated trifold publicity of the book (curled on foredge). Book is in excellent state. The introductory material is written in English and the text that supports the images is in Japanese. 114 short essays in Japanese on the natural beauty of everyday objects in Japan, with shorter English translations at the front of the book. Each type of object from shell spoons, to origami, to paper fans has a least one beautiful full page photo of examples. The essays give considerable insight into the life of the author who grew up in the post war period when food was quite scarce. This discussion of the aesthetic of beautifully designed useful tools, foods etc. also does much to illuminate the Japanese way of thinking.
