Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co, 1889. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blue blind-ruled cloth with gilt spine lettering. lviii, 480pp. Tissue-guarded frontispiece. Very good. Tight and nice, with just the faintest binding wear. Choice first edition of this hefty compilation of speeches and writings of the Democratic representative (1883-89) from Missouri (1827-89), with a biographical sketch of Burns by its compiler, the Congressman's private secretar. On the inner flyleaf he inscribes this copy large and bold "To / Don. D.B. Henderson / With the compliments of / Edwd. W. De Knight / Washington / Dec. 1889." David B. Henderson (1840-1906) served Congress as the Republican U.S. representative from Iowa from 1883 to 1903 and as Speaker of the House from 1899 to 1903. De Knight's opening "Life of James Nelson Burns" explains the friendship between Democrat Burns and Republican Henderson (p. xviii): "... his most cordial intimate was a Republican -- the Hon.
