About This Item
New York: Garland Publishing. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1978. Hardcover. 0824032519 . Library stamps/marks/labels/pocket/slip, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover.; 76 illustrations. "Between 1968 and 1970, I participated in one hundred eighty-five hours of tape-recorded conversations with the sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, then nearing eighty years of age. ... The autobiographical information contained on these tapes is valuable for two reasons. In the first place, it provides insights into the drives and preoccupations of a major twentieth-century artist. ... Secondly, and perhaps of equal importance, Lipchitz was witness to some of the most significant moments in the history of twentieth-century art, and his memories extend beyond himself to more general currents of thought during this period. The most important for Lipchituz, by his own testimony, was the formative influence of Cubism. Because of his friendship with artists involved in one or another aspect of the Cubist movement, artists such as Picasso, Gris and Severini, Lipchitz's ideas and memories provide further information about a complex movement. The point of this dissertation is to present some aspects of Lipchitz's life and thought specifically related to Cubism, primarily using material from this taped archive." - Preface. ; Outstanding Dissertations in the Fine Arts; Ex-Library; 309 pages .
