Henty's historical novel, in the very scarce original dust wrapper. An early edition of this thrilling historical novel, set in the eighteenth century during the Jacobite rebellion, and published shortly after the first edition.Newbolt 62.2. 'Reprints of the five shilling edition were issued in the same style as 62.1 [the first edition], but with the date removed from the title page [...] from the year following the publication of this book, the Edinburgh address was not used'. Newbolt notes that 'slightly-differing issues among the reprints of the book in its first edition format are all grouped together under this generic heading'.In the exceptionally scarce publisher's original dust wrapper, unclipped.The novel follows a young Scottish nobleman who supports the exiled Stuarts and becomes involved in their cause. His loyalty to the Stuarts is tested when he falls in love with the daughter of a prominent Whig politician who opposes the Jacobite cause. Illustrated with eight plates after Paul Hardy.With a thirty-two page publisher's catalogue to the rear.A wonderful early edition of this novel from the popular English novelist and war correspondent. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding, with scarce unclipped dust wrapper. Bumping to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally fine. Dust wrapper age toned. Rear wrap detached from back strip and front wrap. Significant losses to back strip head and tail. Front flyleaf and head of front wrap detached, with further significant closed tears to front wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to first and last few pages, with pages otherwise clean and bright. Very Good Indeed
