About This Item

Erfurt, Germany: Johann Heinrich Nonne, 1750. First edition. Hardcover. Very good condition. First and only edition of a history of Nuremberg, Germany, by a German diplomat, historian
and political advisor, Johann Heinrich Falckenstein (1682 - 1760).

Small 4to, 884pp, with frontispiece and 5 copper plates (of which two are folding plates: a genealogical chart, and an illustration of the Imperial Regalia of Sigismund (Holy Roman Emperor in the 1430s, who kept the Regalia in Nuremberg from 1424 to 1796). These regalia of the Emperors and Kings of the Holy Roman Empire are the only completely preserved regalia from the Middle Ages (now in Vienna).

With views of the town hall, the central market, a temple ("der augebliche dianen tempel zu nurnberg"), and the interior of a chapel. The woodcut title vignette with a panoramic view of Nuremberg, the frontispiece with two standing figures flanking an engraved marker, and a map of Nordgau below.

Nicely bound in original three quarter vellum and mottled gray paper covered boards, the gilt title at spine stamped on light green leather title label; all edges with mottled red. With an impressive early heraldic bookplate dated 1839, at the front paste down, and a note in Latin, in a contemporary hand, loosely inserted. Spine a little chipped at head with some discoloration to the white vellum, as would be expected; some rubbing to paper covered boards. OCLC: 367563549 records 2 copies.
