About This Item

Name inscribed inside front wrap, light toning, some careless corner dogears, else content unblemished with poor wraps displaying surface/edge wear, as shown. Creasing and chipped edges.

In this classic frontier adventure, Lois Lenskire constructs the real life story of Mary Jemison, who was captured in a raid as young girl and raised amongst the Seneca Indians. Meticulously researched and illustrated with many detailed drawings, this novel offers an exceptionally vivid and personal portrait of Native American life and customs.

'Indian Captive'' starts with our main character, Mary (though nicknamed Molly) spending time on her family's farm. All of sudden, a group of Seneca tribe Native Americans attack Mary's family and their neighbor's family. Everyone is led away from their homes as prisoners.

The attackers end up letting everyone go except Mary and her neighbor's son, Davy. Davy and Mary are separated and Mary is forced into a Native American family to take the place of their son who was murdered by Englishmen.

Needless to say, Molly isn't too thrilled with this arrangement. She finds the clothing uncomfortable, doesn't understand the language, and hates the boring, salt-less food. Basically she's a typical preteen in an atypical situation: ''How could she bear the rude stares of all the people? How could she live in a place where everything was strange?''.
