About This Item
London,, 1942. Engraved British chart, sheet size 70 x 51.5 cm, black and white with pink wash, traces of pink paper label in lower left hand margin, blank verso; shows soundings etc, with interior detail of relief, roads and settlements. First published in 1884, with corrections to 1942. Shows the Portuguese colony of Goa and the forts protecting the approaches to the city at Aguada and Marmagoa. Portugal rermained neutral during the Second World War, and three German merchant vessels sought refuge in Marmagoa harbour on the outbreak of war. One of these, the Ehrenfels, operated a secret transmitter which guided U-boats against Allied shipping in the Indian Ocean. The freighter was sunk in a clandestine mission by members of the Calcutta Light Horse, known as Operation Creek, in March 1943. Map
