About This Item
Liverpool: Henry Young & Sons, 1897 8vo (22 cm), front. in color, XI, [1], 149, [1] pp, 26 plates. Publisher's burgundy cloth gilt, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom-edge untrimmed (biding slightly rubbed, some foxing to endpapers and untrimmed edges, faded inscription on the front free endpaper dated 1897 possibly by the author). A very good copy of an interesting introduction to illuminated manuscripts. This comprehensive work encompasses chapters dedicated to the origins of illuminated manuscripts, styles of illumination before AD 1000, styles developed after AD 1000, the production process of illuminated manuscripts, their value during the Middle Ages, and the various causes of their destruction. Additionally, it explores the ecclesiastical use of Latin, delves into Books of Hours, and offers examples of their illuminations.
